Hey Button Gwinnett Scouters! I hope all of you are doing well. It was great to see many of you Tuesday night at Roundtable. It was a pleasure to see my friend Richard Atkin, one of the many outstanding leaders from Pack 420. He was there promoting the Scouting event Jamboree Over The Air (JOTA) that is going to be happening this year on Saturday, October 20th (http://gwinnettbsa.org/node/1870). The members of the Gwinnett Amateur Radio Society have been gracious to bring their equipment out on this day so our youth can participate in a global event that last year had 750,000 participants from 9,000 radio stations! I was fortunate last year to see this event in action as Richard coordinated with the LaGrange Amateur Radio Club to host an event during a joint camping trip with Packs 420 and 846. The event was so successful that Richard was determined to see how the entire district could enjoy this event. Thank you Richard! I'm excited that many more youth will be exposed to a truly unique event.

Can you believe September is almost gone??? By now, I'm sure your unit program calendars are in full gear. You've welcomed new youth and parents into your packs, troops, and crews, and the chaos (albeit organized) has ensued, right? Trying to get those youth and adult applications processed, while at the same time trying to answer questions from new parents can be extremely time absorbing.

Welcome to a new school year Button Gwinnett Scouters! I hope all of you had a fantastic summer. Some of you were active with Cub Scout Day Camp, while many of you were spending wonderful summer days with your Boy Scout Troops at various resident camps. Some of you took in high adventure treks with your youth at Philmont, Northern Tier, or Sea Base. Hopefully with a busy summer schedule, you were able to get some well-deserved down time as well.

I know quite a few of you from across the district, but for those of you who don't know me, my name is Terry Walls. I'm an Assistant Scoutmaster from Troop 846, where my son, Joshua is a member. I served in many capacities at Pack 846, including Cubmaster, before crossing over to the troop. I'm a passionate Wood Badger and have been fortunate to serve on staff the past two springs. This summer, Mathias Jackson recruited me to fill the role of Program Chair and I'm excited to serve you and our district with all the dedicated volunteers who deliver a fantastic program.

The Program component of the District committee covers many areas: (1) Training,  (2) Camping and Outdoor Promotion, (3) Activities, (4) Civic Service, and (5) Advancement and Recognition.

The District Committee has worked extremely hard to put together a program calendar that will be fun for you and your youth, as well as providing you with opportunities for training, development, and service.

The Atlanta Area Council is pleased to announce the promotion of George Snipes to the position of Senior District Executive of the Button-Gwinnett District effective August 20, 2012.  George will be reporting to Scott Voorhees, Field Director, who will be providing leadership and support to assure his successful transition to the Button-Gwinnett District.

George joined the Atlanta Area Council in June 2010 as District Executive serving the Soapstone Ridge District, and was promoted to the Tara District in February 2011.  During his tenure, George has shown significant leadership in supporting the NYLT program along with unit service, membership growth, volunteer cultivation, and Friends of Scouting.  The Button-Gwinnett District will benefit from the experience he brings to this new area of responsibility.

George and his wife, Alyson, attended the BSA National Annual Meeting in May 2012 where George was recognized by the National President’s Recognition Program as one of the top 32 youth-serving executives across America.

George is a graduate of the Georgia College & State University in Milledgeville, Georgia.  He is an Eagle Scout and a Vigil Honor member of the Order of the Arrow.  George has attended the OA National Leadership Seminar and served as the OA Lodge Chief in 2006-2007.  As a youth, George served as the Assistant Program Director at the 2007 summer camp at Woodruff Scout Reservation.

Please join the Atlanta Area Council in congratulating George on his promotion and welcoming him to the Button-Gwinnett District.  George is enthusiastic about the prospect of meeting each one of you and working with you, as a team, to support the youth and volunteers of the district.  Together, we are certain the Button-Gwinnett District will grow and thrive.
