Program Chair's Corner: Fun, Service, Recognition!

Posted on Oct 19 2012 - 1:29am

Hey Button Gwinnett Scouters! I hope all of you are having a fantastic October! Autumn is my favorite time of year... Whether it's tailgating with friends and family for college football games, going to the mountains to see the vibrant colors of the leaves, or camping in absolutely gorgeous weather, I just can't get enough of my favorite season!

The program Committee has many activities going on now or planned soon that I'd like to share them with you. I've categorized them into (1) Fun, (2) Service, and (3) Recognition.

Having Fun

I want to thank our Camping Chair, Fred Carroll, for coordinating the Button Gwinnett weekend for the Haunted Harvest Spookeree last weekend. There were over 2,000 people in attendance from all over the council and Button Gwinnett represented with over 400 Scouts and family members! What a fantastic turnout for both our council and district. I've heard from many people that Bert Adams was crowded, but fun was had by one and all.

You'll also see a posting on our website for a "Save the Date" for Webelos Woods, which will be taking place March 8-10 in the spring. There will be more information coming out soon, Webelos Dens - be sure to mark your calendars and plan to attend this event. It's a fantastic outing where you'll be exposed to a Boy Scout camporee experience, while learning various Boy Scout Skills... It's definitely something to attend.

Helping Others

Be sure to attend our November Round Table Meeting (11/13: 7-9 PM) where we'll hold our District Scouting for Food kickoff meeting. We'll have bags, flyers, and information sheets for all units. As most of you know, Scouting for Food is our annual council sponsored service project, where our boys canvas local neighborhoods, putting out shopping bags and asking homes to fill the bags with non-perishible foods. Our units can elect to donate the items to food pantries/banks of their choosing, or they can choose to donate the food to centralized scout locations. As in years past, our SFF event will take place in March, but we hold our kickoff meeting in conjunction with the Atlanta Area Council kickoff, so that you have enough advance time planning your service event. Make sure you have a representative from your unit attend so that you can receive your materials and information!

Recognizing Our Unsung Unit Heroes

You'll notice on our home page that there is an announcement for nomination requests for the Button Gwinnett Golden Quill Award. It's one of the most important awards a Scouter can receive in our district, in my opinion. For those who aren't aware of this award, we ask each unit's Committee Chair to coordinate the nomination of your unit's most valuable volunteer, the person who goes above and beyond to make sure that your unit operates smoothly and that the youth have an impactful experience. Each nominee is recognized at our annual district banquet that will take place on January 18th (more details to come soon on this event). Richard Potts, our Advancement and Recognition Chair, is asking that all nomination forms be submitted to him by December 1st. This year, we have three methods to submit: (1) Mail the form to Richard, (2) Email the form to Richard, (3) Bring the form with you to Re-Charter Saturday along with your other paperwork... It's that simple!

It's a great way for you to recognize that unsung hero and to tell them, "Thank You" for all the hard work they do.

As always, let me know if you have any questions, or would like to provide feedback about our district program, I'd love to hear from you! You can contact me at: program@gwinnettbsa.org

I'm looking forward to seeing you in November!

Yours in Scouting,

Terry Walls - Program Chair
